That Shadow my Likeness

Portraiture and Landscape In Whitman’s Idea of America

Juried Photography Exhibition

Jurors Stuart Rome and Paul Cava (Philadelphia)

Photography was a medium of fascination, high interest and importance to Whitman and no 19th century writer was more photographed than Whitman himself, providing a way for him to record the changing self. This photographic exhibition will focus on portraiture and landscape exploring these two important elements to Whitman’s oftentimes contradicting, nativist and problematic reflections on the idea of America, its people and its landscape.

“These I Singing in Spring Collect for Lovers”

Erotic Celebrations of Self, lovers, and Comrades

Juried Video Exhibition

Jurors Stiofan Oceallaigh (United Kingdom) and Jose Luis Cortez (Puerto Rico)

Video selections from an international call will highlight Whitman’s global influence celebrating and exploring a wide range of responses in the way homoerotic love has been viewed by generations of gay men since the publication of the Calamus sequence. The Calamus poems provide and remain some of the earliest and most radical poetry celebrating erotic male love and affection, and subsequently, served to establish individual and collective gay male ideas of self, community, democracy, masculinity, sex, and freedom.
