Yin yoga is a slow-paced, passive practice that targets the deepest tissues of the body, our connective tissues – ligaments, joints, bones, and the deep fascia networks of the body. It is the perfect compliment to more vigorous Yang-based practices and a respite from our modern, hectic lives.
A Yin yoga class usually consists of a series of long-held, floor-based poses that mainly work the lower part of the body – the hips, pelvis, legs, and lower spine. These areas are especially rich in connective tissues. The poses are held for up to five minutes, sometimes longer. Yin is almost entirely passive, although some Yin postures contain Yang elements.
The benefits of Yin yoga include: an increase in circulation and flexibility; enhanced calm and balance for both the mind and body; reduced levels of stress and anxiety; a deep sense of relaxation; and improved joint mobility.
