The Midwinter Revels, a lively mid-winter celebration of the

Winter Solstice, returns to Tacoma’s Rialto Theater in December. This year it is

set in 19th c. Mexico - a swirling spirited celebration, joyful, colorful, funny,

tender, magical. We’re thrilled to feature longtime Revels friend Bill Johns and

new Revels friend Marleyne Hernández who bring us the heartfelt story of a

young woman reclaiming her Mexican heritage. Also featured is impressive

folk band Trío Guadalevín – singing in several languages and playing a

wonderful array of instruments – possibly, but not limited to, guitar, vihuela,

jarana, quinta huapanguera, bendir, bombo, teponatzli, cajón pandereta.

Joining them are Bailadores de Bronce dancers, Revels own Adult and

Children’s Choruses, the Seattle Brass Ensemble, and more.

Expect the vibrant colors and rhythms of Mexico, a hilarious La Pastorela, and

the Nahuatl story of Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe. As always, it’s a

joyous celebration for family and friends - the perfect December gathering.

B.J. Douglas once again directs the production with Assistant Stage Director Michelle Matlock, Music Director Megan

Oberfield. Set design by Martin Christoffel. Costume design by Alex Lewington.

The Midwinter Revels® is a lively concoction of folk tradition and high art that blends adults and children, amateurs

and professionals, audience and players and truly does include dancing in the aisles. Full of humor and beauty, it

plays each year to large audiences of all ages from all over the Pacific Northwest.

Midwinter Revels productions are based on traditional communal material - the music, dance, drama, customs,

and rituals born out of the passages of human life and the cycles of the turning year. The heart of the

productions is the “shortest day” – the solstice theme of light and dark, and the age-old trust in the promise of renewal that lies in the sleeping land.
