Dear Huntsville Al. Are you ready to support a beautiful cause that’s oh so dear to me? Allow me to brief you on my vision.
From the fuzzy pink wigs to the fake pink lashes to the hopeful sound of her voice, memories of my mother remains vivid in my mind. It’s been 8 years since the passing of my mother and I can still hear her voice daily. I can remember how she would always say. I am not cancer. She wanted to bring awareness to the fight that so many women faced.
According to the American cancer society in 2023, there were an estimated 287,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer, diagnosed in women and an estimate of 43,215 breast cancer invasive.
To honor and remember my mother, Tammy Davis I’ve organized an event called 50 shades of pink hair-A-Thon presented by AnointedTouch LLC Now in its seventh year. I wanted to keep her legacy alive so instead of doing a marathon or a walk, I decided since I’m a cosmetologist to have a Hair-A-Thon, where barbers and stylist will cut and style hair. The only requirement is that they must incorporate the color pink, that was our pledge.
Since its debut, the event has grown each year. This year the hair-a-thon will feature: barbers and stylist several performances, including dance teams, comedy acts and artist, live music, food, vendors, giveaways, honoring survivors, fun for the entire family! I’m not surprised about the support we’ve been getting just because of who my mother was, she was amazing to so many people in the community both Huntsville and Decatur.
My families journey with breast cancer begin when my mom was diagnosed in 2007 at the tender age of 38 while i was a sophomore at Alabama A&M after undergoing chemotherapy in a single mastectomy, Dr. declared her cancer free
In 2014, after i finished cosmology school at Paul Mitchell. my mom‘s cancer returned, stronger and more severe Spreading to her brain and bones. After moving back home to be my mother primary caretaker We started chemo right away. did radiation, trials and went out to MD Anderson, in Texas, but it was too late. My mom passed away Christmas day, 2015.
The year after my mom died it was a must i continued her legacy, letting everyone know that their cancer battle does not have to be a secret and to speak up about it so we can love on them just as a communities loved on my mom.
During my mom’s cancer treatments the community rallied around us donating food holding fundraisers to help alleviate medical costs.
Through a Facebook campaign the event has raised over 8K. In the last 6 years which all proceeds from 50 shades of pink will go to the survivors, and those who are still battling to offset financial burdens, either by helping them pay rent or utilities, or simply giving them a gift to do as they please.
I am writing this letter in hopes that I can return to Huntsville for 50 shades of pink 7th annual hair-a-thon with your support via donation, lending a hand or just spreading awareness.
Sincerely
Amber Davis
