Gospel and Gullah in Georgetown: Crowns

download

Called “rich and varied” by the New York Times, “Crowns” is a powerful, moving and celebratory Obie-winning musical play which explores the themes of individuality and identity, culture and history using hats as a revelatory vehicle. Crowns follows the experience of an aloof teenager forced to move to South Carolina from her home in New York following a tragic event. By telling and singing vivid tales in this coming of age story, a cast of colorful characters takes her on a journey through ancient traditions to the present day, illuminating both the grit and beauty of Southern culture.
