“Lighten Up!” became the name of the musical group that Randy and Rose Light adopted when they moved their family from Athens, Ohio to the Pocono’s in 1995. “Lighten Up!” uses various combinations of musicians featuring Randy and Rose as the core of band –from duo to multiple pieces, depending on the event. “The Blues” has always been one of the favorite genera among the many styles the band plays. Randy and Rose were in the” Hideout Blues Band” where they played with local and regional blues artists such as Clarence Spady, Little Sammy Davis, and Slam Allen. Randy also played with Andra Faye, a member of the national act –“Uppity Blues Women”.
The powerful and silky voice of Rose Light is influenced by the blues stylings of Bonnie Raitt, Janis Joplin, Etta James, and Susan Tedeschi. While living in Seattle, Rose was introduced to the blues, playing as a street musician, at The Pike Place Market. Rose moved to Ohio, where she played in an acoustic female trio, then met Randy, where together, they played for years, in many different venues. Rose plays rhythm guitar and sings blues standards such as “Love Me like a Man,” “Tore Down,” and “My Babe,” to name a few.
Randy’s music was influenced by the blues of Taj Mahal, Johnny Winter, and Canned Heat. Randy’ was exposed to New Orleans blues from his mother’s Dixieland band. Randy plays lead guitar (acoustic or electric), and mandolin. Randy’s slide guitar can be heard on Muddy Waters Blues tunes like “Sweet Home Chicago,” Willie Dixon’s “Seventh Son,” and Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Pride and Joy.”
Joining the “Lighten Up! Blues Band” are Ralph Liberto on sax, flute and keyboards, Bill Coleman on bass and Sharon O’Connell on drums.
